What is a Freight Broker?

Freight Brokers are license members in the transportation industry. They must have a surety bond, MC license, and or DOT license.

There are two types of Freight Brokers;

  1. Home Freight Brokers – Can only book Freight for home dwellings and can not book property Freight without having a license to do so.
  2. Property Freight Brokers – Can only book property Freight and can not book home Freight unless he holds the license for home Freight.

Some are self-employed or partnered with a brokerage company that finds drivers and carriers to haul their shippers loads.

These Brokers work directly with shippers only. They must find carriers and owner-operators to pick up shipments for their shippers under contract.

Freight broker Training

Brokers handle the funds from the shipper and factoring, and they pay the carriers when the loads are delivered.

What is an Independent Freight Agent?

Independent Freight Agent works for a brokerage firm are is self-employed dispatcher that works for any owner-operator or have a contract to work for a carrier(s).

Certification is required, and no licenses needed for these positions. These dispatchers must have a dispatch agreement to work for any carrier and or owner-operator.

Tanker Trucks

Tankers are known as bulk loads meaning they are hauling the same material. Some Gas tankers may have two small tankers one for gas and the other for diesel.
